Teaching Experience
George Street Middle School (March 2014-present)
At the present time, I am teaching Grade 8 French Immersion Language Arts and Post Intensive French at George Street Middle School. I began teaching at George Street quite recently (March 17th, 2014), and am really enjoying my time there so far. I look forward to gaining additional experience in teaching French as a Second Language over the coming months.
Devon Middle School (Sept.2013-March 2014)
I began working fulltime as a Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion Science and Social Studies teacher at Devon Middle School (Fredericton, NB) in September of 2013 and continued there until the end of my contract in March of 2014. My responsibilities at Devon Middle included planning and delivering lessons and assessments, tracking student progress, attending regular team, staff, and parent meetings, working s part of a professional learning community, and attending professional development seminars. Alongside my teaching responsibilities, I was also involved in the supervision of regular school dances. My time at Devon Middle School was a very valuable and enjoyable learning experience that allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and to gain knowledge and skills that are sure to improve my teaching practice. Of particular note are the new learning opportunities that Devon Middle has provided to me, including both teaching a grade 7/8 split class and teaching Social Studies. I look forward to applying what I have learned at Devon Middle in my future teaching endeavours.
S.T.U. B.Ed. Teaching Internships
As part of the St. Thomas University Bachelor of Education Program, I have completed eight week internships at both the high school and middle school levels. Brief descriptions of these internships, including the subject areas that I taught, my teaching responsibilities, and the extra-curricular activities in which I was involved are provided below. A list of teaching related activities in which I have participated can be found toward the bottom of this page.
Internship I - Sussex Regional High School (Nov.-Dec. 2012)
My first teaching internship took place at Sussex Regional High School (Sussex, NB), where I taught grade 11 chemistry and math for a period of eight weeks. During this time, I was responsible for planning and delivering lessons and assessments, marking student work, and keeping accurate records of attendance, marks, etc. I also attended regular department and staff meetings, engaged in professional development activities, and helped facilitate Grad Class fundraisers, including the annual Prom Fashion Show and Winter Formal. My time at SRHS was a truly valuable learning experience where I was able to further develop my passion for teaching and share my love of math and science with others. In this short eight week period, I learned more about teaching than I could have ever imagined. I look forward to applying what I have learned and gaining additional teaching experience in the future.
Internship II - Sussex Middle School (March-May 2013)
My second teaching internship took place at Sussex Middle School (Sussex, NB), where I
taught grade 7 science, health, and English language arts for a period of eight weeks. During this time, I took on full teaching responsibilities including planning and delivering lessons and assessments, tracking student progress, attending regular team and staff meetings, as well as various professional development seminars. I was also involved in the daily Breakfast club, assisting with supervision, and attended monthly dances as a chaperone. Since arrangements for my internship to be done in French Immersion fell through, I also made weekly visits to grade eight French Immersion science and language arts classes. To gain additional experience in French, I spent the final week of my internship observing, assisting, and leading brief activities in French Immersion and Post Intensive French classes from the grade six to eight level. Overall, my second teaching internship was a wonderful learning experience. Building on the skills that I acquired during my first teaching internship, this second teaching experience has given me the necessary knowledge and confidence to succeed in the teaching profession.

Teaching Related Experience
Science Education Research AssistantThis past summer, I was fortunate enough to work as a research assistant for one of my professors (Dr. Grant Williams) at St. Thomas University. My role as a research assitant involved
writing regular article reviews and conducting transcriptions of science education videos. Dr. Williams' research focuses on model-based teaching and learning and the use of whole class discussions in the science classroom and is sure to inform my own teaching practice. Laboratory Teaching AssistantDuring my fourth year at Mount Allison University (2011-2012), I worked as a laboratory teaching assistant in the Chemistry Department. In this position, I was responsible for overseeing weekly lab periods, and assisting third year students with various laboratory procedures. This experience allowed me to further develop my passion for teaching and to gain an appreciation for all the hard work that goes into managing a classroom.
C.P.F. Head Camp CounselorDuring the summers of 2009 and 2010, I had the pleasure of working for Canadian Parents for French (CPF) in Sussex, as Head Camp Counselor for both residential and day camps promoting French as a second language. This position not only required planning of daily camp activities, but also management of camp staff, particularly in the residential setting, where students in grades 5-8 early, late, or intensive French immersion stayed overnight with their teachers. Similar organization, leadership, and enthusiasm were required to fulfill the head camp counselor position at the CPF day camp, open to elementary school students with varying French proficiencies. These camp experiences have not only provided me with an
introduction to the education setting but have also taught me to work as part of a team, a skill that is certainly transferrable to the teaching profession. |
Sunday School and Nursery AssistantFrom 2005-present, I have been involved with the Sunday School and Nursery programs at St. Mark's Anglican Church, where my role has been to supervise and entertain young children during regular church services. I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages, and this experience has certainly contributed to my pursuit of a teaching career.
MASSIE Conversation PartnerDuring the summer of 2011, I volunteered with the Mount Allison Semester Studies in English (MASSIE) program, as a conversation partner. The MASSIE program offers the opportunity for second year university students from Japan to spend a semester in Canada in order to improve their English. My role in the program was to meet with an assigned Japanese student once a week in order to help her with the transition to Canadian culture and the English language. Being a MASSIE conversation partner was wonderful experience, where I not only learned to adapt to cultural differences but also took part in teaching a second language. These skills are sure to be beneficial in teaching French as a second language, and working with students of all cultures as part of the education system.
